Around 10,000 people attended a rally on Moscow’s Novy Arbat Street on March 10, demonstrating their opposition to Vladimir Putin, Russia’s President-elect.

This weekend’s rally was smaller than many of the protests seen in Moscow recently. Rally organizers put attendance at around 25,000, but police estimates said the crowd was closer to 10,000 in size. RIA Novosti, who use special software to estimate crowd sizes, put the size at 9,100 with a margin of error of 15%, which indicates that the police estimate is the more accurate.

A number of prominent opposition movement leaders addressed the rally, including Vladimir Ryzhkov, Garry Kasparov and Sergei Uldatsov. Notably, though, senior members of Russian opposition parties and the four defeated opposition candidates stayed away.

Although a few arrests were made – including Left Front leader Sergei Uldatsov – they were not of the scale seen at the previous weekend’s rally, where more than 500 were arrested.

What next for Russia’s opposition movement?

It seems likely to be the last major protest that Moscow will see for a while.

Attendance has been gradually decreasing through the year and, without the focus of an upcoming election, it is unclear what direction Russia’s nebulous and politically disparate opposition movement will take over the coming months.

Some, disheartened by the apparent failure of the current methods of holding legally approved rallies, seem to be arguing for more direct action. Key proponents of this way forward include Sergei Uldatsov, leader of the Left Front movement, who was arrested at Saturday’s rally and at the previous rally. He seems to be supported by Alexei Navalny, who was arrested at last week’s rally and has recently called for a campaign of “civil disobedience”.

Many others, though, feel that opposition in Russia needs to move away from being in simple opposition and towards offering a genuine alternative to the current government, view expressed by Dmitry Gudkov, a member of the A Just Russia party who has been heavily involved in organizing a number of protests. In his blog, he wrote (RUS): “The next demonstration must not be ‘against’ but ‘for’. We need to move away from the format of ‘five minutes of hate’ and announce a plan of action, answer the question ‘What next?’ and demand the authorities conduct reforms.”

The Russian Federal Customs Services (FCS) has announced that it will no longer levy a 5% tax on imported iPads in a move that will boost sales for Apple, but has irritated rival manufacturers.

Previously all imported iPads had attracted a duty of 5% because they were classified as a navigational device.

Their ability to access the GPS system put them in a different class from more traditional computers. There has been no official confirmation of whether the move only applies to wi-fi iPads, which of course have no GPS access, or if it applies to all iPads, but rival manufacturers have assumed that it applies to both and cried foul.

A spokesman from Acer’s Russian office told Gazeta.ru that “if this information is true, we will demand explanations from the FCS and we will seek cancellation of customs duties on our tablet computers.” Another source, from an un-named Russian retailer, threatened to try and set one Russian Government department on another, saying that “if the FCS does not change its position in the nearest future, the Federal Antimonopoly service will have to investigate this situation.”

The Russian iPad market

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is a big Apple fan

iPads and iPhones are incredibly popular in Russia. According to a recent report published by Yandex, the leading Russian search engine, there are 700,000 iPads in Russia (half of them in Moscow alone), and they account for 1% of Russia’s internet usage.

This is despite Apple not having a retail presence in the country and not seeing Russia as a priority when it comes to sales.

Although it is not too difficult to buy an iPad legitimately, there are still opportunities for black marketeers to make a profit. One retailer told British newspaper the Financial Times that “ten flights arrive everyday from the US… [and] there is probably someone on board each one with a suitcase full of iPads.”

Danny DeVito visited Moscow to promote his Russian language voiceover in Lorax, an animated version of the Dr Seuss tale.

American actor Danny DeVito visited Moscow this week to promote his new film, an animated version of the Dr Seuss classic The Lorax.

Unusually, DiVito is the voice of Lorax in both English and Russian

DeVito voices the character of the Lorax in English but, unusually, he is also doing the voiceover in several other languages, including Spanish, Italian, German – and Russian. He told Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t speak any of the languages. [...] They would give me two coaches and an editor, all from the country, and I’d go to the studio and we would dig in. We’d do it phonetically and I’d learn how to say the lines so that they felt I didn’t have an accent.”

You can see how well he has done in this video of Danny DeVito speaking Russian.

As well as DeVito, the film version of Lorax (Лоракс in Russian) stars Zac Ephron, Ed Helms and Betty White. Sadly, none of them have visited Russia to promote it… yet. Here’s a trailer of the film (in English):

More than 500 people, including prominent opposition blogger Alexei Navalny were arrested in protests against Putin's election victory

More than 500 people were arrested this evening during protests against fraud in the Russian Presidential election.

Those arrested included Sergei Udaltsov, Ilya Yashin and prominent blogger Alexei Navalny. The three reportedly occupied a fountain in Pushkin Square and refused to leave, calling for an ongoing protest along the lines of the recent Occupy Wall Street protests. All three were later released.

Also arrested, at a different protest earlier in the day, was serial arrestee Eduard Limonov.

As well as the notables listed above, another 250 people were arrested in Moscow and around 300 in St Petersburg. Most were later released.

Several journalists from major news sources were also arrested briefly before being released. They included reporters from Kommersant and Russian State news agency RIA Novosti as well as Alexander Zemlianichenko, head of AP’s Moscow Bureau. The arrest of journalists has led to criticism in the press, including from citizen news agency Ridus who note that obstruction of journalists is illegal in Russia, and from the Committee to Protect Journalists.

According to the BBC, the rally at Moscow’s Pushkin Square attracted between 14,000 and 20,000 protestors. A competing pro-Putin rally across town also attracted around 14,000 people, and considerably fewer arrests. Organisers have applied to the Moscow authorities for permission to hold further rallies later in the week and at the weekend.

With all the votes counted, the Russian Central Election Commission has confirmed that Vladimir Putin has won the Russian Presidential election.

Despite this year’s election being the most contested for many years, Putin secured 63.64% of the votes counted, comfortably above the 50% threshold needed to avoid a second round runoff. His nearest rival, the Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov received only 17.18% of the votes, and oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov, the only independent candidate in the race, came in a distant third with 7.94%.

Putin will be formally inaugurated as Russia’s President at a ceremony on 7 May 2012, where he will replace Dmitry Medvedev.

Criticism

A number of the defeated opposition candidates, including second placed Zyuganov, have claimed that the poll was rigged, and have refused to accept the election results. “I cannot recognize these elections as fair, honest and worthy,” Zyuganov told supporters. “I see no reason to congratulate anyone.”

Gennady Zyuganov refused to recognize the result

Zyuganov was backed by OSCE election observers, who noted a number of incidents of ballot stuffing. Former Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino Picula, head of the OSCE’s delegation probably didn’t help his observers when he observed that “the point of elections is that their outcome should be uncertain.”

However, Putin claimed that his victory came after a “fair and open fight”, and was supported in his claims by Vladimir Churov, head of the Central Election Commission, who rivaled Picula for absurdity with his claim that Russian elections were the world’s freest and fairest, and that many foreign election observers were actually spies.

Golos, the independent Russian election observers who have been criticised for receiving funding from USAID, noted that this election was an improvement on December’s Duma elections, but that it was still in breach of Russian law and international election standards. It went on to note that, despite what it believed to be a significant level of fraud, its exit polls indicated that Putin had won just over 50% of the vote, which would still have been enough to secure a first round victory.

Putin’s tearful acceptance speech

Putin celebrated his victory in front of a packed crowd of supporters that, according to RIA Novosti, numbered 70,000.

“Did I promise you that we will win?”, he asked. “We have won! Glory to Russia!”

Putin’s acceptance speech also provided what will probably prove the most iconic image of the election – a shot of Putin apparently crying, wiping away a tear. Although he acknowledged that his victory was emotional, Putin also claimed that his tears were caused by the biting cold wind.

Global Reaction

The response from leaders abroad has been generally positive. As expected, China, Iran, Syria and a number of former Soviet states have offered their wholehearted congratulations.

The Governments of the US and most EU states also seemed positive. The US State Department stressed that “the election had a clear winner with an absolute majority” and promised to work with Putin in the future. EU states generally took a similarly concilliatory line.

However, while the US and EU governments might have offered a cautious welcome to Putin’s victory, opposition parties were often scathing in their criticism of the election and their own governments. In the US, Republican primary candidate Mitt Romney released a statement saying that the world had witnessed “a mockery of the democratic process” and British PM David Cameron’s offer to work with Putin was roundly criticised by the opposition.

Factbox – Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin became Russia’s second President after Boris Yeltsin stepped down in 2000. He quickly developed a reputation has a hard man of Russian politics, and made his mark by crushing the opposition in Chechnya.

After serving two terms as Russia’s President, he stepped down in favour of Demitry Medvedev. Putin remained the more popular of the two, however, and they agreed that Putin, and not Medvedev, should run for the Presidency in 2012.
